The Death’s Door is the brain child of writer/director Ben Schaeffer Death’s Door has more to do with living than dying. One day I asked myself, “What if there was a man who died every week?” I wrote the question down and let it lay dormant. Some time later I revisited it. I first wrote a short film about an old man who has dealt with this odd condition of dying and being resurrected his whole life.
It ultimately came down to choice: the choice to live or die. As I wrote, I realized the protagonist was not conflicted with dying, but had to find reasons why he should come back.
The story caught the ear of Stephanie Dawson and she agreed to produce it. We decided to do a web series based on themes from the short film. I wanted to show the protagonist’s backstory from the short film, so I created a new character, Marcus, with the same ailment, going through the same conflicts. With a new character opened new possibilities that will hopefully intrigue the audience: How many people have this 'condition’? How do they live their lives? How do those around them cope? As the series progresses, the world of Death’s Door opens up grander and grander.
