DJ Soulclap

“This is how we take the old to the new!“ This quote from an old Nice & Smooth song is what best describes DJ SoulClap’s production. Born in Braunschweig, Germany and embedded in the Hip Hop culture since the late 90’s he has been making his way from creating mixtapes for his friends to producing songs for the whole world to hear. SoulClap started DJ’ing in 2001. When he saw Masta Ace and Edo.G on stage in 2004, he decided to dive deeper into the music. “I had a good friend who had been making music for years with his group called Soultecniques. He showed me how to make beats with Cool Edit and Fruity Loops, I’m still sticking to these programs till today.”

DJ SoulClap made his first international contacts on mastaace.com. His first productions were songs for B.L.O from the Bronx and Lex from Queens. With the time passing by he made a lot of contacts on myspace and released his first Promo EP in the end of 2007. It featured artists such as Superstar Quamallah, Tony Tigerstyle, Brown Co., Bru Lei, Stranger Day and Shaoo Zulu. After getting a lot of good feedback from all around the world he quickly put out the follower, which was a remix of Jay-Z’s American Gangster album. He remixed the whole album on one weekend to be one of the first to put it out, followed by more than 100 other producers who also remixed it. It was featured on blogs and websites all over the internet and two of the tracks got honored by being featured on each of Kevin Nottingham’s “American Gangster: Best of the Remixes” albums on kevinnottingham.com.

Live In The Cipher Artist Review: Masta Ace & MF_Doom - MA_Doom: Son Of Yvonne

Live In The Cipher Artist Review: Masta Ace & MF_Doom - MA_Doom: Son Of Yvonne

Live In The Cipher show brings you another legend in the hip hop game Masta Ace. Ace has a new release in collaboration with MF Doom titled MA_Doom: Son Of Yvonne. Join the cipher team as we see if Masta Ace can continue to deliver the masterful rhymes that he is known to deliver over MF Doom beats.

Artist Review: Masta Ace

Masta Ace has always managed to remain current and totally classic in the exact same breath. I know it sounds impossible, but the truth must be told. As one of the most imaginative, narrative and prolific lyricists ever to emerge from the mean streets of Brooklyn USA, his albums are like mini-movies. As a matter of fact, the man has been born, and re born, and born yet again. In his 1988 lyrical debut, he took a stand along side Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap and Craig G on hip hop's most important posse cut, ‘The Symphony’. His first full length album, the Marley Marl produced Take A Look Around (1990), established the rookie emcee as a sophisticated voice from the ghetto.

Slaughtahouse (1993) was an ingenious conversation with hip hop, as Ace and his incorporated crew took on the entire gangsta rap genre. In 1995, his Sittin' On Chrome LP unified American car culture as a celebration of rims and rides and rap music. Then after a 6 year hiatus, Ace caught the world off guard with the epic Disposable Arts (2001). This classic theme album, complete with plot, main characters and score, played like a feature film on wax. A Long Hot Summer, (2004), was the prequel to Disposable Arts. These two “flicks”, were connected, and although Ace was the only actual recurring character, the storylines blended together in a well thought out arrangement. "Coming off of Disposable, I knew I wanted to do another theme album," Ace admits. "I watched ‘Thunderbolt and Lightfoot’ with Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges. The whole side-kick movie thing was the original inspiration for that album.” In 2004 he announced that “…Summer” would be his fifth and final solo album. It seems that he was planning a unique and different way to continue making contributions to Hip Hop.

Ace has teamed up with Wordsworth, Punchline and Stricklin to form the new group EMC. All three were featured heavily on his last two releases and the chemistry that resulted was undeniable. Ace mentions, “After touring together for the last 6 years, the group album became the natural evolution of our friendship.” The album will be released this summer on M3 Records, an upstart independent label formed by Ace and his partners “Filthy Rich” and “DJ Rob”. "I'm hoping that M3 thing is gonna be the next cool hip hop label," he says. "When you see the logo you're gonna expect quality music. Like back in the days when people saw the Cold Chillin' label they bought the record because they knew it was gonna be something hot. I hope to establish M3 with this new album.”

Artist Review: MF Doom

Daniel Dumile (pronounced /ˈduːmɨleɪ/ DOO-mə-lay; born 9 January 1971) is a hip hop artist who has taken on several stage names in his career, most notably MF Doom, often stylized as MF DOOM, now known as simply DOOM. He has appeared in several collaborative projects such as Danger Doom (with Danger Mouse) and Madvillain (with Madlib).

Dumile was born in 1971, in London, England, the son of a Trinidadian mother and a Rhodesian father. He moved with his family to New York and was raised in Long Beach, New York. As Zev Love X, he formed the group KMD in 1988 with his younger brother DJ Subroc and another MC called Rodan. When Rodan left the group, Zev found another MC to replace Rodan named Onyx the Birthstone Kid. A&R rep Dante Ross learned of KMD through the hip hop group 3rd Bass, and signed the group to Elektra Records. Dumile and KMD's recorded debut came on 3rd Bass's song "The Gas Face" from The Cactus Album, followed in 1991 with KMD's album Mr. Hood, which became a minor hit through its singles "Peachfuzz", "Who Me?" and heavy video play on cable TV's Yo! MTV Raps and Rap City.

Live In The Cipher Artist Review| Busta Rhymes - Year Of The Dragon

Live In The Cipher Artist Review| Busta Rhymes - Year Of The Dragon

Artist Review: Busta Rhymes - Year Of The Dragon

Trevor Tahiem Smith, Jr., (born May 20, 1972), better known by his stage name Busta Rhymes, is an American rapper, producer and actor. Chuck D of Public Enemy gave him the alias Busta Rhymes after NFL wide receiver George "Buster" Rhymes. Early in his career, he was known for his wild style and fashion, and today is best known for his intricate rapping technique, which involves rapping at a fast rate with lots of internal rhyme and half rhyme, and to date has received eleven Grammy nominations for his musical work.

About.com included him on its list of the 50 Greatest MCs of Our Time (1987–2007), while Steve Huey of Allmusic called him one of the best and most prolific rappers of the '90s. In 2012, The Source placed him on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time. MTV has called him "one of hip-hop's greatest visual artists." He was both a member of Leaders of the New School and a founding member of the label and group Flipmode AKA the Conglomerate.

Special Guest: Joi Rocks

“Music to me is a powerful art of expression.” Capturing the potency of a musical legacy which extends far further than her arrival to the USA, JOI ROCKS has successfully formulated her striking sound, taking her unique position in Hip Hop, a genre which has loaned platform to Joi’s distinctive floetic rhyming.

Effortless versatility as an emcee is JOI ROCKS vocal flagship. Switching up rap with chanting, singing and toasting with seamless guise, Joi simply enjoys expressing herself and allowing others to relate.

“I’m intrigued by the emotional energy, passion and creative process of music; its beautiful ability to move masses is what makes music my life. When I’m recording a song, or performing, my connection and love for the audience brings inner joy and contentment in a way that’s indescribably fulfilling.”

Relocating to the USA, Joi’s journey as an artist started 'back home' in Zimbabwe. Proficient in piano at 6 years, Joi soon began writing rhymes and rapping by age 12. While an East Coast stamp dominates her sound, Joi Rocks celebrates her African inheritance by switching a Philly-chic/New York vernacular to spitting her exotic mother tongue (Shona) with grace and urban reinvention. Representing Hip Hop’s blessed global appeal, Joi’s unique rhyming ability is a truly necessary addition to this genre.

Penning all her material is fundamental to the JOI ROCKS experience, with real life matters stylishly embodied in her songwriting. Joi’s rhymes encompass her experiences of socio-economic and political hardship, as well as the realities of being a strong, sensual woman in a male dominated industry.

Joi’s key life principles to live by include “Think it, believe it, receive it” and “Never ever give up.” Coming from humble beginnings, she was born and raised in a small town in Southern Africa. This artist did not allow the environment she grew up in to set any limitations or boundaries to how far she can go in the music industry and in the world as whole.

A graduate Management Information Systems (MIS) degree is the only true contender to her sometimes explicit and always clever rhymes, making Joi a true ambassador to all aspects of her music empire. Writer, performer and strategist, JOI ROCKS has used her business tenacity to deliver live shows, and achieve radio play throughout her hometown Philadelphia and extending internationally to Zimbabwe, UK and South Africa.

In January 2011 Joi Rocks teamed up with Violator Management under A. B Butler and David Lighty’s supervision and she relocated from Pennsylvania to Queens, NY.

Recent hype includes:

Live In The Cipher Artist Review Beanie Sigel - This Time| Special Guest: Adonis

Live In The Cipher Artist Review Beanie Sigel - This Time| Special Guest: Adonis

Artist Review: Beanie Sigel

BEANIE SIGEL understands pressure. Hailing from South Philadelphia's rough and tumble 21st and Sigel streets, "Beans" emerged as one of the game's most revered rappers and even while facing the type of hardships that would break most artists, the Broad Street Bully has always excelled in the studio.

On August 28, 2012, just weeks before he is scheduled to turn himself in for a two-year prison bid, Beanie Sigel will release THIS TIME, his Ruffhouse Records debut and fifth official solo LP overall.

"Pressure busts pipes, but it could also make a diamond," says Sigel about his process of creating this new album under duress."It could either make you or break you."

With his mounting legal troubles, the former Roc-A-Fella star only had a few weeks to record his latest work, but THIS TIME is filled with the same street-inspired jewels that have made Beans so beloved throughout his career. On the title track, "Sig" stands triumphant as he reflects on the ups and downs in his life.
