Pull yourself from ogling at Maria Sharapova for a moment and take in the unseen backstory behind this portrait. Then, multiply that by 7 and you will have the newest campaign from Nike Women. For Fall 2011, the brand with a Swoosh challenges each one of us to “Make Yourself”, to take up on the unforeseen challenges in life, to be ready for the successes or failures to come, and strength the belief that one’s character is not predestined, but shaped by perseverance, hard work, and doses of pains, sweats, and tears.

In portraying this mantra, Nike Women enlisted the help of 7 women athletes, each at the height of their professions:

Allyson Felix – USA Track & Field Star and Olympian
Li Na – Chinese Tennis Professional and Recent Winner of French Open
Sofia Boutella – Algerian-French Choreographer and Former Olympian in Gymnastic
Perri Shakes-Drayton – British Hurdler and Olympian
Maria Sharapova – Russian Tennis Professional and Formerly #1 Female Player in the World
Hope Solo – USA Professional Soccer Goalkeeper
Laura Enever – Australian Surfer and Winner of 2010 Woman’s ASP World Junior Title

Motions frozen in time, each difficult poses were made to look effortless, largely thanks to the talented photographer Annie Leibovitz, whose uncanny skill and eyes for the cinematic undertone created these dramatic portrayals. “Make Yourself” Campaign by Annie Leibovitz for Nike Women Fall 2011 will be feature in printed periodicals the coming months.
