Overcoming Insecurity in Relationships

Wednesday, 06 July 2011 15:02
Overcoming Insecurity in Relationships

Feeling insecure in a relationship can be natural up to a point, at least until the relationship "settles". However, insecurity can destroy a relationship. It drives people to become too 'clingy' or needy and this creates problems. Insecurity causes us to try to control others, and causes us to resist the control of others.

When we enter an intimate relationship we can feel very emotionally vulnerable; especially if we already have a lack of self confidence or self-esteem or have felt let down or hurt in previous relationships. Your insecurity will lead you to start looking for signs of things "going wrong" and you usually find what you are looking for, even if it doesn't exist. People who are highly insecure are more likely to interpret their partners' actions in a negative way and then choose to respond in kind.

Typical thoughts and feelings of an insecure partner include
* Will they reject me?
* Have I done something to upset them?
* This is just too good to last!
* Why did they say that?
* Who's this other person they've mentioned?
* Why did they pause after I said ______?"

Sound familiar?

Insecure partners also tend to end relationships first.  It is easier to walk away rather than risk the pain of abandonment.  But we all need the comforts and support that intimacy can bring us. So what can you do if insecurity is damaging your relationship?

Let's talk about it!

It's Over But We Still Have Children Together!

Friday, 09 March 2012 17:55
It's Over But We Still Have Children Together!

One of the most challenging parts of any divorce, separation or break-up from a long-term relationship is getting along with your ex. In some cases, after you´ve divided up your possessions and worked out other financial and practical matters, you can wipe the slate clean and never look back.

If children are involved, though, this is not usually an option. You have to learn how to get along, be adults, and let go of your resentments -- not only for your own well-being but for the sake of your children. Now, if you´re thinking your kids can´t tell that you´re harboring feelings of resentment, anger or betrayal toward your ex because you mask it so well on the surface, think again. Children respond to who you are and how you feel more than how you pretend to be.

In time, and as you begin to release naturally, your feelings of resentment against your spouse will melt away. While this will make getting along with your ex much easier on you, the most important thing is the impact it will have on your children. They will definitely appreciate your openness to your ex, and in turn will develop a deeper, more open relationship with you.

If anyone you know is currently going through a divorce or break up and they have children, do pass the show info along to them so that they, too, can benefit from this show topic as well.

Let's Get It On With Relationship Coach Sadie! Only on BKS1 Radio.

Interracial Dating: Still an Issue?

Thursday, 28 July 2011 07:04
Interracial Dating: Still an Issue?

Is interracial dating still an issue in this generation?

Interracial couples face a number of challenges, some similar to couples who are from different religions or have different family backgrounds. Will the two families be able to meet and get along?  What about children? How will they be raised? However,  interracial couples seem to have more to consider before making the commitment. Does the family choose to live on this side of town or the other? How will the couple support their children when they face identity issues growing up? The interracial couple will also most likely face negative comments, looks, and stares from complete strangers and even from supposed friends and family. People who interdate need to have the ability to not worry about what others think and say about them. But what if it is your family? Couples have been denied marriage licenses. Children have even been cut off from the family for dating/marrying outside their race.

But  wait! Is that the generation of yesteryear or does Generation X & Y still carry the veiled prejudices of their parent’s generation?

Let's talk about it!

What To Do When Your Spouse Doesn't Want Change?

Friday, 12 August 2011 10:57
What To Do When Your Spouse Doesn't Want Change?

What to do When Your Spouse Doesn't Want Change?

  • Does your spouse complain about not feeling well but won't see a doctor? Does your spouse make plans for a romantic evening or getaway with you and then ruin it by being too tired or not feeling well?
  • Does your spouse talk about spending less money, or eating more healthy foods, or spending more time with the family, or getting more exercise, and then not follow through with those plans?
  • Does your spouse make promises that aren't kept? Does your spouse acknowledge that there are problems in your relationship but refuses to change behaviors or see a marriage counselor with you?

The frustration of your spouse's lack of follow through on good intentions, or saying one thing and then doing another, or breaking promises can slowly erode both the emotional and physical intimacy in your marriage.

This frustration can be heightened if your spouse refuses to seek marriage counseling with you.

What can you do when faced with a spouse who has a serious behavior (gambles, drinks, spends too much money, has a very negative attitude, can't keep a job, is emotionally or physically abusive, doesn't make time for the children or spouse, is unfaithful, etc.) that could potentially destroy your marriage and your spouse won't change, isn't willing to work on improving your marriage, or won't seek marriage counseling?

Although it isn't easy to cope with this type of situation in a marriage, there's help on how you can deal with a difficult marriage when only one of you wants change.

Let's talk about it!

I Love You, But I Think We Should Break Up

Friday, 26 August 2011 18:47
I Love You, But I Think We Should Break Up

Breaking up with someone you still have feelings for is one of the hardest things in the world. Sometimes, however, more pain will be caused by trying to stay together if the relationship truly cannot work out. There are many reasons why you might want to end a relationship with someone you love. Perhaps the romance is gone, but you still get along as friends. Perhaps your life goals are incompatible/ You might want children, while your partner prefers to remain child-free. Whatever your reasons for breaking up, you must understand why you are choosing to end the relationship, communicate honestly and respectfully, and establish boundaries for future interactions.

Breaking up with someone you really care about is never easy. The hurt, anger and confusion you go through only worsens if you have to see him often because of school or work. The best way to get him off your mind after a breakup is to cut off contact as much as possible and keep yourself busy. Take the time to discover your identity as a single person, re-discover friends you may have neglected for your relationship and get to a place in which you feel you can move on. A break up is not the end of the world. Sometimes a break-up can even be a good thing because it will give you a chance to re-evaluate your life, and maybe even lead you to find someone more suitable. The truth is, that you can move on after a break-up no matter how bad it may have been.

Let's talk about it!

Are Single Women Too Independent for Their Own Good?

Friday, 09 September 2011 11:58
Are Single Women Too Independent for Their Own Good?

In the 21st century many woman like to identify themselves as being an Independent Woman.  However what happens when a woman goes too far in expressing her level of independence?

For some pushing female independence is a good thing. Women have finally moved away from the whole Prince Charming coming to save me notion and young women are encouraged to do for themselves.

For others it is seen as pushing division and believe this line of thinking is rooted in hurt and mistrust of men. Perpetuating the "I don't need a man to be happy" philosophy.

What happened to pushing unity? Have single women become so independent and set in their ways that they are destined to be alone?

Signs of an Abusive Relationship

Wednesday, 21 September 2011 09:02
Signs of an Abusive Relationship

Relationship Abuse is a pattern of abusive and coercive behaviors used to maintain power and control over a former or current intimate partner.  Many assume that if they're not being physically abused by their partner, then they're not being abused.  That's not necessarily true.  An abusive relationship means more than being hit by the person who claims to love or care about you. Abuse can be emotional, psychological, financial, sexual or physical and can include threats, isolation, and intimidation. Abuse tends to escalate over time and can happen to anyone, regardless of size, gender, or strength, yet the problem is often overlooked, excused, or denied. Noticing and acknowledging the warning signs and symptoms of domestic violence and abuse is the first step to ending it.

Join the ladies of OWWHH as we discuss the signs and symptoms of domestic abuse and the support available.

Let's talk about it!
